Which modular cylinder to choose?

Follow the steps below to select one for your door, from the range of five modular types.

Tedee offers a range of five modular cylinders for European-type locks. Using a typical key side on the outside and a secure smart lock mount, they provide a secure solution that allows adjustment and customization with all Euro-profile locks on the market.

Remember, that on European locks you can install tedee with an adapter, that requires just cutting a key by your local locksmith. If you’re unsure which installation method to choose, read the comparison here.

Here you’ll find a step-by-step guide on how to measure your old cylinder, determine the new length and selecting a product to order.

Measure how much your old cylinder sticks out

With a cylinder still in the door and on the inside of your home, measure the dimension indicated below. Please write it down and move to the next step. You will need this value later.

Uninstall the cylinder

With a door open, take out the screw on the side of your lock – just like in the image. While inserting and rotating the key, you’d be able to take the cylinder out easily.

Cam or gear? Determine your lock type

After taking the cylinder out, you can see a rotating mechanism. This piece can be a single rotating block or a teeth wheel – cam or gear. Compare the shape with the table below. That’s how you determine what type of cylinder to buy.

Measure the cylinder

Lay your cylinder on the table and take the ruler. Focus on the screw hole in the center – that will be a reference point for your measurements. Remember which side is from the inside and from the outside of your door.

Now measure both sides: from the center of the mounting hole to both ends of the cylinder. Write these two measurements down, clearly indicating which side is from the inside and from the outside.

E.g. outside – 37mm, inside – 30mm.

Before you choose

Generally, you should adjust a new cylinder to the same length as your current setup. However, there are some exceptions, and fitting new cylinders leaves some degree of freedom.

Your new cylinder does not always have to be exactly as long as your old one. Mechanically, the lock will work the same way. Some alterations may be necessary to accommodate the smart lock.

If your cylinder on the outside is secured with an anti-burglary escutcheon – rosette surrounding your cylinder – the external length of the new cylinder should not be longer than your old setup. If you can’t find a precisely equal size, choose a shorter cylinder.

Calculate the length

Come back to the measurement you took in the first step: on the inside, did your cylinder protrude between 2 and 6mm?

If yes – the internal side length may stay approximately the same. Move to the next step.

If not, you may need to adjust the new length to ensure the proper smart lock fit.

If your cylinder stuck out more than 6mm, you need to adjust the new one to be shorter.

E.g. if your old cylinder stuck out 10mm, the final length of the new cylinder should be 4 to 8 mm shorter. If the old one was 46mm long on the inside, you could adjust the new cylinder to 40mm, which will protrude 4mm.

If the old cylinder stuck out less than 2mm, the new cylinder needs to be longer.

E.g. the inner side of your cylinder is 36mm, and it protrudes less than 1mm. To install tedee smart lock, you need the cylinder to extend 2-7mm from the escutcheon. As the tables below indicate, you can set the length from the inside to 40mm. This way, it will stick out 3-4mm.

How to choose a smart lock cylinder? Step by step guide

To sum up here’s all you need to know to make the final choice. To begin, collect all information:

How much did your old cylinder stick out from the escutcheon inside?

☐ Less than 2mm	☐ 2-7mm	☐ More than 7mm
Round the inside length up to the next available size	Choose a new cylinder with an inside length as close to the old one as possible.	Round the inside length down to the smaller size available.

Follow the steps:

• Pick the table with cam or gear cylinders.
• Find the suitable outside length in the first column
• Follow the row to the right cell and ensure your required inner dimension is there. Keep in mind if it should be shorter, longer or the same as your old cylinder.
• Check your cylinder type to order in the last column.

Cam cylinders

First of all, you need to decide what brand of modular cylinder you are getting. We offer dedicated modular cylinders, produced by M&C and GERDA, renowned European manufacturers with 30+ years of experience in security hardware.

Which one to choose? Examine your old cylinder – if it possessed an SKG class, choose the M&C product to meet the same safety requirements of your lock. Suppose it uses other or no safety attests. In that case, you can freely choose from the widest range of length adjustments from both M&C and GERDA.

What differs are their security certificates, meeting the needs of different hardware requirements. GERDA’s product is Class 6 certified in protection standard PN-EN 1303:2015-07, while M&C’s model obtained SKG*** security rating.

Construction of M&C cylinder is of special design, protecting against lock snapping and forcing in. If you’re an owner of a high-security door, the GERDA cylinder requires an anti-burglary rosette for maximum protection.

The dimensions of my old cylinder don’t fit these. What should I do?
